FIRST TRIMESTER MUST-HAVES
1. Prenatal Vitamins
- New Chapter, Advanced Perfect Prenatal Vitamin I appreciate the small size of these vitamins. Made with superfood organic ingredients and include iron and folate! These are formulated for maximum absorption and are sugar free, unlike gummy vitamins which also contain zero iron.
- Folate supplement For days when you are too nauseous to drink your prenatal, just take just folate to keep your baby safe. However, my doctor said it’s not an everyday substitute for prenatal vitamins.
- Vitamin B-12 supplement B12 is a must for vegetarian and protein averse mamas! I met with a dietician in my first pregnancy and this was one of her recommendations for me to ensure baby’s and my proper nutrition. Additionally, B12 is an energizing supplement!
- Vitamin D - May reduce risk of gestational diabetes (GD) , helps with blood sugar, a little known fact is all pregnant woman become more insulin resistant, although not all go in to develop GD
- Prenatal Omega-3 DHA - DHA supports baby's brain development. Garden of Life’s Prenatal DHA, fish oil goes through rigorous third-party testing for pesticides and heavy metals like mercury.
2. St. Anne’s Mother’s Rosary
Anne was Mary’s mother and Jesus’s grandma. I requested this fancy Rosary my first Christmas as a mom and I use it so much. It especially helps me feel peaceful in my new pregnancy. I like to say a decade for my baby and all the babies! A decade is simply: 1 Our Father + 10 Hail Mary + 1 Glory Be.
3. Autospout-Water Bottle, Contigo
You will get lots of use out of this one! Thirst is a common early pregnancy symptom! You can expect to be extra thirsty throughout your whole pregnancy and beyond if you plan on breastfeeding. An autospout feature lets you drink water from any position, which is handy once baby arrives!

4. Ginger
Ginger is the only thing that sort of quells my nausea. I especially love Jamba Juice’s Ginger and greens smoothie made with: lemon, peach, mango, kale and ginger.
5. Extra-soft toothbrush and cinnamon flavored toothpaste
Brushing my teeth, in each pregnancy has been a sure fire way to trigger my gag reflex. Extra-soft bristles help minimize this. Mint can also trigger nausea so a flavored toothpaste can help.
Additionally, be sure to floss as pregnancy can inflame the gums and mama’s oral health is vital to her healthy heart and baby’s health.
6. Thermal Lunch Pack, Artic Zone
Keeps fruit, cheese, sandwiches and salads fresh without refrigeration so you can eat-healthy-for-two on the go!
7. Pregnancy Safe Sun Protection
Our skin when pregnant becomes extra sensitive to the sun due to hormones. A wide brimmed hat and pregnancy safe sunscreen can help protect your complexion from damage.
Mineral sunscreens are generally safe.
Each pack, fits in your pocket or purse for when that pregnancy hunger strikes. These snack packs are a great source of protein and carbs which is exactly what your body needs when pregnant. They are one of the few things I could eat besides crackers when I was feeling nauseous.

9. Journal
Document this special time in your life. Write your thoughts and experiences throughout your pregnancy. I write a letter to my baby every week telling him how things are going. I enjoy writing about what size fruit he is and how I’ve been feeling. You may be having some funny vivid dreams which can be fun to track in a journal and look back on the insanity of it all.
Thanks baby!
10. Dried Apricots
Apricots are a tasty alternative to candy! Pregnancy slows down your digestion to give baby extra time to absorb nutrients for his or her development. Unfortunately a slow digestion is uncomfortable. Eating a few dried apricots can help you avoid this discomfort and provide additional iron, fiber and other good nutrients.
11. Pregnancy Books
- Real Food for Gestational Diabetes, by Lily Nichols - This is the best nutrition book for pregnancy I ever read! Even if you don’t have GD this is the best book if you are into nutrition. It’s backed by so much research, has a chapter on supplement, exercise and is easy to understand. Did you know GD develops based on how your body reacts to hormones produced by your placenta.
- Brain Rules for Baby, by John Medina - Brain rules for baby is a great book to read whether you are already a parent to a toddler or pregnant because it covers brain development from conception to 5-years. Written by a father of two, who also happens to be a neuroscientist! According to the author intelligence is genetic and it comes from mama! Parents can either support or hinder their child’s natural capabilities. Surprisingly, the greatest predictor of future success is executive function aka emotional control not IQ! And if you want smart kids learn to control your own emotions and create a safe calm home environment. There really is so much more to this book than what I mention, it is definitely worth a read.
- The Nursing Mother’s Companion, Kathleen Huggins, R.N., M.S. - Huggins books on breastfeeding and baby led weaning are the best! All her guides are backed up by the latest research and are easy to read! Huggins consults the top experts and is an expert herself! Each chapter has a Survival Guide for common and not so common problems.
