Mom’s French Toast Recipe
My children never met my mother, but they love grandma Cecy’s French toast. My mother’s French toast is quite famous among our friends, family and neighbors. I have some funny memories of her passing French toast over her fence.
French toast is one of two recipes my late mother shared with me when I left the nest, along with her favorite spatula which I still use daily. Mom was an extraordinary fusion cook. Funnily enough, when she married my father, she knew nothing about cooking. He bought her a few cook books and the rest is history. Motherhood and married life really allowed her undiscovered culinary talents to shine.
All you need is three ingredients to make French toast: Bread, milk, eggs. You can customize French toast to your liking by changing the ratios of milk and eggs. I must agree with mom, that the addition of vanilla extract is a must!
This French toast recipe is very basic, except for the base of streusel bread: When each slice of streusel is heated in the buttered pan it caramelizes for an amazing breakfast experience. Streusel French toast can be enjoyed on its own with no powdered sugar or syrup. I serve it with a side of fresh berries to balance out the sweetness.
French Toast Variations
Depending on our choice of bread, you can add sugar to the French toast custard mix, or spices such as nutmeg, apple pie spice, pumpkin spice, or some other combination to change it up seasonally. You can easily make French toast dairy-free with homemade almond milk.
French toast bread options:
- Sour dough (my favorite)
- Streusel Loaf
- French baguette
- Whole wheat bread (surprisingly delicious)
- Croissants
- Brioche
How to serve French toast
Serve French toast alongside: Fresh fruit, powdered sugar, maple syrup and honey.
Buen provecho,
Laura
