November Garden: Planting Guide, Zone 10
The first week of November is usually mild, in the comfy 70’s, although the nights are cooler. It will soon be time to bundle up and switch to a fall wardrobe. Early November is a last-call to collect seeds before the rains come.
This year I collected the following seeds to start again next spring:
- Basil
- Cilantro
- Lavender
- Marigold
- Parsley
- Tomato
November is the last month to plant your winter greens and prep your garden for a successful harvest from now until next fall.
November is also the last month to tidy and red-do your garden by:
- Pulling weeds
- Transplanting bushes or trees
- Trellising
- Fixing fences
- Setting up rain barrels
- Storing garden tools
- Finish any building projects: sheds etc...
- Making space for non-hardy plants
- Planting winter greens and cover crops
NOVEMBER GARDEN TO-DO LIST
- Clear plant matter around trees and plants.
- Treat fruit trees with horticultural oils once the leaves fall.
- Prevent peach leaf curl by applying calcium polysulfide once the leaves fall.
- Trellis grapes and other vines.
- Add dry leaves to compost - Make with 2 parts dry leaves (carbon) and 1 part greens (nitrogen). Your homemade compost should be ready by spring.
- Plant cover crops
