September Garden: Planting Guide, Zone 10

Seed saving is an important garden tasks this month. Saving the seeds from the crops you grow allows each subsequent crop to be better suited for your garden’s actual environment. Your crops will be more sun hardy, cold hardy, and drought tolerant than plants from new store-bought seeds because those that are suited for your garden thrived.

Saving French Marigold Seeds

Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. (John 12:24, New American Bible, Revised Edition)

The September garden is very messy with all the pumpkin vines and heavy tomato bushes.September, often greets us with a heatwave, it can be in the 90’s one day then go back down to the 60’s. All that sun means I need to be vigilant about watering any seedlings, or wait until October to start my seeds.

There are still a few new pumpkin vines with flowers. I cut the male flowers to make squash blossom quesadillas!

Our early girl tomatoes are still producing and there are plenty of jalapeños, bell peppers, beans, and carrots.

However, fall is definitely upon us as the signs of summer tomatoes, sunflowers, and beans fade away.

September Garden To-dos

  1. Harvest and cure the last of the pumpkins.
  2. Cut and store sunflower heads to plant next spring.
  3. Gather up all the tomatoes and tomatillos to make the final batches of tomato sauce and salsa verde.
  4. Gather and save seeds for next year.
  5. Last chance to set up rain barrels.
  6. Spread compost and mulch.
  7. Tackle weeds and clear areas around the fruit trees.
