5 Resaons to Say NO to Tilling

Rototillers may be tempting to use in your garden if you have large weeded spaces because they provide instant results. Your garden may looks great after tilling, but appearances can be deceiving.
Do you know that tilling can actually do soil more harm than good?  Here are my top reasons to avoid tilling in my garden.

1. Tilling may deplete soil of nutrients such as Carbon an essential nutrient for healthy crops.

2. Tilling kills soil enhancing organisms like fungi and earthworms! Worm casting (poop) are gold in a garden, and if you are lucky enough to have worm poop why destroy it?

3. Hardens soil and restricts root growth which leads to less plant growth.

4. Exacerbated existing soil issues by grinding down your soil so much that it’s useless. You should not grind sand, clay, and silt.

5.  Makes your garden’s soil dependent on fertilizer.

If you have already tilled your garden,  fret not. Add compost and cover crops, if you have earthworms even better! Your soil won’t be ideal for gardening yet, but over time it will heal.

Happy gardening!
