January Garden: Planting Guide, Zone 10

Winter is the season for hardy greens! Most greens grow well in cold weather and will be ready to harvest in 40 days. If you missed out on seed straying in the fall you can start seeds again this month! I am looking forward to starting my peas this month!

TO DO LIST

  • Plant any transplants.
  • Fertilizer dormant trees.
  • Treat dormant fruit trees with horticultural oil or lime sulfur
  • Treat dormant apricot trees with copper sulfate
  • Tackle weeds now, before they flower, go to seed and multiply. Cover weeds with a thick black tarp for at least 10 weeks. This really works and is an easy and eco-friendly way to clear large weeded spaces.
  • Start companion seeds for your soon to be green garden beds: marigold, onion, and garlic deter pests such as aphids and white moth which target brassica crops (kale, cabbage, broccoli, mustard etc...).
